I Want a Cadillac!

Recently there has been a Cadillac CTS commercial shown on TV a lot. It is starring Kate Walsh from Grey’s Anatomy and her new show Private Practice. The commercial obviously is trying to sell the car, but the script is genius. Kate Walsh is driving the car and talking about its features but then says none of that matters, pretty much she is saying all that matters is if your car turns you on. This is a perfect example of what we were talking about in class. Women are used to sell everything and it works; women want the car because they want to be turned on and importantly men want women to be turned on by their car. It is a really good commercial, but I would say that it is targeted more towards men because of the sexual innuendos, and you know men think about sex more then women.

However, there is another commercial that Kate Walsh does for the Cadillac CTS but ends up very different. She begins by telling some of her favorite things and ends with pulling up to a bunch of guys in the car and proceeds to beat them in a race. This is very targeted towards women. Men have the stereotype that they are the car people, they know everything and always have the best ones. Strong women is becoming the new trend, women are just as good as men…or better. (“I can do anything you can do better. I can do anything better than you.”) This commercial is telling women if they have this car they will beat the guys, which is appealing to many women.

In the two ads the visual part of it is basically the same as well as the mood of the music, they script is changed and it makes all the difference.

Cadillac in the past was huge and then kind of drifted into the background. They are making a comeback with their luxury sports car models and their ads are doing a great job of bringing people in. See for yourself, I know when I watch the ads, especially the “my favorite things” one, I want that car. And that is the whole point.
